Sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY IS A GIVEN

SUSTAINABILITY AT OUR COMPLEX

The clubhouse of HC Oranje-Rood was newly completed and put into use in 2016. At the time, Diederendirrix architecture & urbanism designed it with great attention to sustainability

Thus, the building has a triangular shape. Not only for aesthetic reasons, but also from an energy point of view. As a result, the clubhouse has less facade area than a rectangular building, so less energy is lost.

Solar Panels

The building is energy efficient and within the field hockey world a forerunner in this field. For example, this building has an EPC (Energy Performance Coefficient) of 0.2 thanks to high insulation values in the building envelope and its own energy generation through over 200m2 of PV (solar) panels on the roof. Thanks to the unique shape, good insulation and solar collectors on the roof, the building is virtually energy neutral (BENG).

LED Lighting

A lot of energy is saved because the club building and main field are equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting. Our ambition is to also provide the other fields with LED lighting in cooperation with the municipality of Eindhoven, see this article.

Heat pump technology

Smart heat pump technology is used to heat and cool the building. Because the building is located in a water catchment area, there is a continuously pumped water stream available as a source which runs through the building and from which heat is extracted and can also be cooled using the heat pump. This water stream is also purified and used for the irrigation of 5 of our artificial turf fields, which also saves an enormous amount of water! A wonderful example of innovation where nature is used to relieve nature!

Materials

The club building is also sustainable in terms of materials. This is evidenced by the use of a lot of wood. Wood contains a lot of CO2 storage and in the form as applied, this wood also requires very little maintenance. The exterior facade with aluminum exterior frames and doors are also low-maintenance and made of circular material. Algae control of the water fields has also stopped using the additive hydrogen peroxide. The complex is fully integrated into its natural environment with plenty of space for natural greenery.

Among other things, 300 m3 of wood was used in the clubhouse, including 266 m3 of Spruce and 35 m3 of WaxedWood (Pine). This means a CO2 - sequestration of 343,976 kg. For comparison, it offsets the exhaust emissions of a mid-size car over 1,279,973 km, or the annual electricity consumption of 212 households.

Green Power

Green electricity is used, supplied by Gemeente Eindhoven .

GENNEPER PARKS - BIODIVERSITY

HC Oranje-Rood's sports facility is located in the heart of the Genneper Parks; a natural and leafy historic stream valley landscape in Eindhoven.

Together with the Eindhoven City Council, HC Oranje-Rood has accounted for the biodiversity and flora and fauna of the sports facility. Specifically by installing facilities for birds and insects in the public areas around the fields. Visible to members and visitors. And purposeful: to make habitats more beautiful and effective while giving biodiversity experience and educational.

At HC Oranje-Rood, for example, the oak processionary caterpillar is controlled naturally. By using boxes for cabbage and other species of titmice or by promoting insects by sowing flowery strips.

Greening parking lot

Within the Genneper Parks, we as a club are actively involved to make the area even more sustainable. After all, this is a unique area where nature, sports, culture and recreation come together. This is expressed, among other things, in the greening of our parking lot creating a wider stream valley with great ecological value. We have agreed with the Municipality of Eindhoven that, as compensation for the parking spaces we 'give back to nature' at peak times, we can use the new P&R adjacent to our sports complex for this purpose.

TEXTILE

In cooperation with ABN AMRO, we have a ''Clubhub'' in the clubhouse, a circular collection initiative for sportswear and materials. Oranje-Rood has partnered with Drip started. Drip collects used and new sportswear, shoes etc. so more children can play sports in an outfit that suits them.

In addition, in restrooms we use hand dryers and towel rolls instead of loose paper to avoid waste.

2nd hand fair

We host a 2nd hand fair twice a year to encourage reuse of materials, from sticks, to shoes, shin guards, skirts and vests.

MATERIAL USE CAN10

We are explicitly committed to a healthy sports canteen.

The assignment to our partner CAN10 is to create a healthy offer and they are implementing a policy in this in line with the healthy canteen of ''Jongeren Op Gezond Gewicht'' (JOGG).

Together with our partner, we have established KPIs. Through customer satisfaction surveys among members, visitors and sponsors, we receive feedback from our guests in areas such as product quality, service, waiting time, etc. An important KPI in addition is a 10% waste reduction, including minimizing plastic. Coffee is served in ceramic cups, tea, beer and wine in glass. All our disposables are biodegradable except for beer mugs, which are only used at large special events. For this we are in contact with several suppliers for a responsible solution. Lemonade is served in the special reusable cups of our main sponsor ABN AMRO!

Pet bottles today are made of completely recycled plastic. Collection of these bottles is done through special ''Petmans'' and the deposit money collected is donated to Spieren voor Spieren!

Excess food is greatly minimized through Just in Time (JIT) deliveries. As of March 1, 2021, excess produce will be composted and at major events, the still usable produce will go to the Food Bank.

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

With our sustainability committee, we continue to explore initiatives that can lead to even more sustainability and savings, such as converting the lighting on fields 2 through 8 from halogen to LED and expanding the PV panels.
